How quality is estimated

Good browsing: ≥2 Mbps download and ping <250 ms. Good streaming: ≥5 Mbps download. Good gaming: ≥5 Mbps down, ≥1 Mbps up, ping ≤60 ms and jitter ≤20 ms. Good video calling: ≥5 Mbps down, ≥3 Mbps up, ping ≤150 ms and jitter ≤30 ms. “Excellent” uses stricter thresholds; “Fair” and “Limited” indicate less headroom. Missing required measurements show “Not enough data”. These are NetCheck guidelines, not an Ookla rating.

What is a WiFi speed test?

A WiFi internet speed test measures the connection from your wireless device, through your router and internet provider, to a test endpoint. It includes more than the radio link inside your home. NetCheck cannot measure the maximum capacity of your WiFi hardware in isolation, or automatically confirm which WiFi band you are using.

This page uses the same real measurements as our internet speed test. For a wireless internet speed test, first connect your device to the WiFi network you want to check. The browser tests whichever connection your device actually uses.

How to test your WiFi speed

  1. Check your device’s network settings and confirm that it is connected to your intended WiFi network.
  2. Stay in your usual room for the first test. Note the location and band if your device shows it.
  3. Pause large downloads and uploads you control, then start the tool above. Let ping, download and upload measurements finish.
  4. Repeat near the router using the same device. Compare results one at a time, not with both tests running together.
  5. If possible, compare with Ethernet. Keep notes about the time, location and connection method so you can identify a repeatable difference.

NetCheck is a free WiFi speed test with no account required. Tests transfer real data, up to 1 GB per direction; your provider’s data allowance and charges still apply.

Understanding your wireless results

WiFi download speed

This is the rate at which your browser receives test data, in Mbps. A low reading can reflect the wireless link, your ISP connection, other traffic or the test path. It does not identify the slowest part by itself.

WiFi upload speed

This is the rate at which the server acknowledges data sent from your device. Compare it with your package’s upload allowance, which may differ from download. Pause a cloud backup before comparing uploads, and record whether the result changes.

What does ping mean?

The WiFi ping test measures the time for small HTTP requests and responses. It includes browser overhead and the path to NetCheck’s endpoint. It is not your game server’s ping. Jitter summarizes variation between successive latency samples; neither value here diagnoses packet loss.

What is a good WiFi speed?

A good result is one that supports your actual tasks with enough capacity for simultaneous use. Streaming depends partly on download throughput; sending videos depends on upload throughput; calls and games also need consistent response times. Check the recommendations of the apps you use instead of relying on one universal speed threshold.

Use your wired result as another reference. If nearby WiFi and Ethernet are similar but the bedroom is consistently slower, investigate coverage in that room. If both connection types are slow, include device activity, the router, your ISP and the test path in the investigation. Neither observation alone proves the cause.

Why is my WiFi slow?

Distance, walls and router placement

Distance and physical obstacles can weaken a wireless connection. Compare an open area near the router with a room separated by walls or floors. An open, central router position can be a useful placement experiment; avoid moving or disconnecting provider equipment without checking its instructions.

Interference and WiFi bands

Nearby networks and other radio devices can compete for wireless airtime. Generally, 2.4 GHz offers wider reach, while 5 GHz can offer higher throughput at shorter distances. Walls affect the bands differently, and the better choice depends on the room and equipment. See NETGEAR’s explanation of WiFi frequency bands.

Connected devices and background traffic

Device count alone does not tell you how much capacity is in use. A single active backup may be more relevant than several idle devices. Ask whether other people are streaming or downloading, and compare before and after pausing activity you control.

WiFi vs Ethernet speed

Ethernet removes the wireless hop from your test. It is a useful comparison, not a promise that every wired setup is faster: the cable, network port, adapter and device can still limit a connection. Use the same device where possible and confirm it is using Ethernet for the wired measurement.

If Ethernet repeatedly performs better, focus on wireless conditions. If both are similar, buying a different WiFi router may not address the bottleneck. Record a few comparisons before contacting support or purchasing equipment.

How to improve WiFi speed

  1. Try a better router position within the limits of your cables and manufacturer’s instructions, then retest from the problem room.
  2. If your router lets you select a band, compare 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz from that room. Some routers choose a band automatically.
  3. Schedule large backups and downloads away from important calls or gaming sessions.
  4. Check the router manufacturer’s update instructions. For ISP-managed equipment, ask your provider before changing configuration.
  5. If the problem continues, share room-by-room and wired comparisons with your provider. Include times and affected devices.

Get a more accurate WiFi speed test

Keep the device, browser, test service and VPN state consistent. Change one condition at a time and compare typical results rather than the single highest reading. The WiFi link rate shown in device settings is not the same as end-to-end internet throughput. NetCheck is an online WiFi speed checker, not a local wireless certification test.

How can I test my WiFi speed?

Connect to the intended WiFi network, pause large transfers and run the tool above. Repeat near the router and compare with your usual room using the same device.

What is a good WiFi speed?

It depends on your apps and simultaneous use. Compare their requirements with your typical download, upload and latency results, and use a wired test as a reference where possible.

Why is my WiFi speed slower than my internet plan?

The package describes your internet service, while this test includes your device, wireless link and the route to the test endpoint. Compare near-router WiFi and Ethernet before deciding whether the problem is wireless or elsewhere.

Is WiFi slower than Ethernet?

Not in every setup. Ethernet avoids wireless interference, but port, cable and device limits still matter. A controlled comparison is more useful than assuming either connection must be faster.

Does distance from the router affect WiFi speed?

It can. Test near the router and again in your usual room, keeping other conditions similar. A repeatable difference is useful evidence when investigating coverage.

Should I use 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz WiFi?

Compare both where you actually use the device, if your router allows it. The band guidance above explains the range and throughput trade-off; there is no universally best choice for every room.

Why does my WiFi speed change throughout the day?

Your own traffic, nearby wireless activity and wider network conditions can change. Record the time and compare WiFi with Ethernet to narrow down the pattern.

How can I improve my WiFi speed?

Start with placement, band comparisons and pausing background transfers. Retest after each change. If several devices remain affected, share your observations with your provider.

How measurements and data work

Your public IP is detected through ipify (with ipapi as backup). Network details use matching Cloudflare edge data or server-side ipwho.is and ipapi lookups of that IP, with ipapi.is as an additional provider. Speed tests transfer random, uncompressed data between your browser and NetCheck’s own Cloudflare-hosted endpoints. These services receive your public IP. When you check your IP, OpenStreetMap receives the approximate coordinates to display the map. Login is optional and does not change measurement access. When you sign in, NetCheck saves your latest 100 test results to your account. IP addresses and device coordinates are not included in saved test history. You can delete your history from your dashboard.

Each direction uses four concurrent HTTP transfers for a 12-second measurement window after a connection warm-up. Downloads count received bytes; uploads count server-acknowledged bytes and finish active requests before calculation. Final speeds use total bytes divided by elapsed time, not the fastest sample. A 1 GB limit per direction may shorten very fast tests. This remains a measured HTTP estimate. Server distance, Wi-Fi, VPNs, browser overhead and the test size affect results; very fast lines can read below their full capacity. Ping includes HTTP overhead and jitter is the mean difference between consecutive latency samples. Local time follows your device settings.
