Ping and jitter: why fast internet can still feel slow

Transferring a large file quickly and getting a quick response are different jobs. Look at delay alongside download and upload speed.

Latency is waiting time

Latency describes the delay in moving data. Round-trip time includes the outward journey and the response. Distance and processing along the network path contribute to that delay; a higher-capacity package does not remove those factors.

What NetCheck calls ping

NetCheck times small HTTP requests to its test endpoint. This includes HTTP and browser overhead. It is not an ICMP ping, and it is not a measurement of the route to your game or video-call server. For a problem inside a particular app, compare that app’s own connection statistics when available.

A reading from another test provider is useful context, but the two services may use different locations and protocols. Compare like with like before treating a difference as a change in your connection.

Jitter is variation between samples

NetCheck calculates jitter as the average absolute difference between consecutive latency samples. Imagine three illustrative samples of 30, 31 and 29 ms: their differences are 1 and 2 ms, giving 1.5 ms with this calculation. Samples of 30, 80 and 30 ms produce 50 ms. These are examples, not live measurements.

A small set of samples describes only that moment. Another application may calculate jitter differently. Do not assume two differently defined jitter values are directly comparable.

Investigate delays with a short comparison

  1. Record when the delay happens and whether it affects a call, a game or general browsing.
  2. Run a completed test while your own large transfers are paused and note the connection type.
  3. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet when possible, or repeat near the router.
  4. Look at the affected app’s statistics during normal use. Note whether the delay coincides with uploads or downloads elsewhere in the household.
  5. Repeat under the original conditions to check whether the difference is consistent.

This is a troubleshooting workflow, not a way to diagnose the exact network hop causing delay. NetCheck does not currently measure packet loss or latency under load, so its results cannot confirm either packet loss or bufferbloat.

Avoid a universal good-or-bad cutoff

The acceptable delay depends on what you are doing and where the service is hosted. Start by comparing your current experience with your own earlier results on the same setup. If a call or game repeatedly struggles, save those times and the app’s relevant readings for support.

What to do next

If the problem changes with your connection method, follow the Wi-Fi comparison guide. If it affects one service, check available service reports. If multiple services and devices are affected, share your observations with the internet provider. A speed test is a starting point for that conversation, not a complete network diagnosis.
